Bagan Itinerary 5 Days: Temples, Sunrises & Ancient Wonders (2026)

Upon arrival at Nyaung-U Airport, transfer to your hotel in Nyaung-U or New Bagan. After checking in and settling down, we'll begin our Bagan adventure. In the afternoon, we'll visit the bustling Nyaung-U Market, a great place to observe local life and find unique souvenirs. Later, we'll head to the majestic Shwesandaw Pagoda, renowned for its panoramic views, especially at sunset. The sight of the sun dipping below the horizon, casting golden hues over thousands of ancient temples, is an iconic Bagan experience and a perfect introduction to this magical place.

Today starts early with an unforgettable sunrise experience over the Bagan plains. We'll find a suitable temple or designated viewpoint to watch the hot air balloons ascend as the sun paints the sky. After sunrise, we'll explore some of Bagan's most iconic temples. Our first stop will be the Ananda Temple, a masterpiece of Mon architecture. Next, we'll visit the Thatbyinnyu Temple, Bagan's tallest pagoda, offering a glimpse into its grand scale. We'll also explore the Sulamani Temple, known for its intricate brickwork and frescoes. After a leisurely breakfast, we'll delve deeper into Bagan's local culture. We'll visit a traditional lacquerware workshop in New Bagan to observe the intricate craftsmanship that Bagan is famous for. This is a great opportunity to purchase authentic souvenirs. In the afternoon, we'll explore the impressive Dhammayangyi Temple, the largest of all temples in Bagan, known for its massive brickwork and mysterious history. Later, we'll take a relaxing boat trip on the Ayeyarwady River, offering unique views of the temples from a different perspective and a tranquil way to enjoy the sunset.

Today, we'll take a day trip to Mount Popa, an extinct volcano home to a sacred monastery atop a volcanic plug. It's a significant pilgrimage site for Burmese Buddhists and offers stunning views of the surrounding area. Be prepared to climb 777 steps to reach the top, where you'll find the Popa Taungkalat monastery and mischievous macaques.
