Berat Itinerary 3 Days: The City of a Thousand Windows (2026)

Your first day in Berat is dedicated to exploring the magnificent Berat Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site that has been inhabited for over 2,400 years. Perched on a rocky hill overlooking the city, the castle offers stunning panoramic views of the Osum River and the surrounding landscape. Inside the castle walls, you'll find a labyrinth of narrow cobblestone streets, ancient churches, and traditional houses, many of which are still inhabited today. The castle is a living museum, and you can easily spend a whole day exploring its many treasures. Start your exploration at the main gate and make your way up to the top of the castle, where you'll find the ruins of the Red Mosque and the White Mosque. From here, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the city and the surrounding mountains. Afterwards, head to the Onufri Museum, which is housed in the Cathedral of the Assumption of St. Mary. The museum is home to a collection of religious icons by the famous 16th-century painter Onufri, as well as a number of other important religious artifacts. After visiting the museum, take some time to wander through the narrow streets of the castle, where you'll find a number of small shops, cafes, and restaurants. Today is all about exploring the two historic quarters of Berat: Mangalem and Gorica. These two quarters are located on opposite sides of the Osum River and are connected by the iconic Gorica Bridge. Start your day in the Mangalem quarter, which is located on the same side of the river as the castle. This quarter is known for its beautiful Ottoman houses, which are built so close together that they appear to have a thousand windows. Wander through the narrow cobblestone streets and admire the unique architecture of the houses. You can also visit the Bachelor's Mosque, a beautiful 19th-century mosque with a colorful interior. After exploring the Mangalem quarter, cross the Gorica Bridge to the Gorica quarter. This quarter is located on the opposite side of the river and has a more traditional and authentic feel. On your last day in Berat, take a day trip to the stunning Osumi Canyon and Bogove Waterfall. In the afternoon, head back to Berat and enjoy a final dinner at one of the many restaurants in the city.
